Newcastle United supporters were left to drown their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their team suffer a 3-0 home defeat to Watford on Saturday, inflicting a fourth successive Premier League loss on the North East giants.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the high-flying Hornets off the back of defeats to Burnley, Bournemouth, and Manchester United, yet they would have been hoping for home comforts against Marco Silva’s side on Saturday. But it wasn’t to be as goals from Will Hughes and Andre Gray, as well as an own goal from defender DeAndre Yedlin, secured a comfortable victory for the Hertfordshire-based outfit for their sixth success of the campaign, a result which instigated Newcastle’s drop to 14th in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many deflated and despondent Magpies fans in the Tavern over the weekend, with many wondering what has gone wrong for their side in recent times given that they initially made a solid start to the season.
And one man who could well have helped them in their recent struggles is Watford striker Gray, who was linked with a move to St James’ Park over the summer before swapping fellow top-flight side Burnley for Vicarage Road.
The 26-year-old proved his worth to the Clarets last season with nine Premier League goals in 32 appearances, and although he hasn’t quite been as prolific so far for the Hornets, his second goal for the club gave them a 3-0 lead over the Magpies on Saturday, in turn helping them to back-to-back victories.
However, despite netting the third at St James’ Park, several Newcastle fans took to Twitter to express their satisfaction at seeing their side miss out on the striker over the summer, such was his otherwise indifferent display in the North East…
Gray isn’t a very good finisher. Thankfully. #NUFC

Thank God we didn’t splash £20m odd on him! No better than any of our options.

I’m glad we didn’t end up picking up Gray during the summer transfer window. Has scored, but looks way too complacent when taking shots. Feel a bit sorry for him. #nufc

Looks like he’s aiming to be a January transfer to replace joselu

Thank God Andre Gray is a horrific finisher or this would have been even more embarrassing. #NUFC
