Worth £9.7M In 2008 But What Would Jose Pay For Him Now?

The Daily Mail claim former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has not only turned down the chance to return to the Bridge but is now preparing a raid on his former employers.

Real Madrid are apparently prepared to offer £15m for Chelsea’s versatile Serbian enforcer Branislav Ivanovic.

Jose Mourinho has stated his intent to bolster his defensive options as he aims to dominate La Liga and Europe next season. Ivanovic – who joined Chelsea for £9.7m in 2008 – is seen as the perfect replacement for Ricardo Carvalho after his impressive displays against Barcelona in the Champions League this season.

Mourinho wants Ivanovic to play at right back but his unbelievable versatility makes him a prized asset for any club.

The Mail also state Mourinho has scouted Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal should he fail in his attempts to lure Ivanovic to Spain but the Serbian remains top of Mourinho’s wish-list.

Although Ivanovic is 28 and Abramovich has made his intentions clear to lower the teams average age and the profit made on Ivanovic would be good business but I wonder would it be worth losing Ivanovic?

Ivanovic’s uncompromising style and versatility would make him very difficult if not impossible to replace. He is a capable attacker and very dangerous from set pieces but couples that with a fantastic defensive ability which puts him ahead of any other right back in world football.

Chelsea’s interest in Gregory Van Der Wiel is well documented but he is another example of a modern day full back who is very good at attacking but lapses in his defending.

The only player who Chelsea could replace Ivanovic with would be Micah Richards who’s style is very similar to Ivanovic but realistically a deal for Richards would be near impossible.

From a Chelsea point of view I feel Ivanovic’s unique style and consistency out-weighs any price – stupid money aside – and therefore losing Ivanovic would be a big blow for Chelsea’s squad.
