Would A €40M Bid Actually Be Sanctioned?

The Mirror reports that Liverpool and Manchester City target Javi Martinez has admitted that he does not think he is worth the £33million it would take to buy him out of his current contract. The Athleitc Bilbao man feels that at this time no one will be willing to pay such a high fee for his services.

Martinez told Mundo Deportivo,

“I do not think there’s anyone who wants to pay so much for me, I see it as too much money for me. I don’t think I’m worth 40million euros (around £33.4million).”

Martinez, 23, has drawn interest from a number of clubs, most notably from Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City. The highly rated central midfielder has been in impressive form for the Basque side this season, helping them reach the last 16 of the Europa League and keeping them in contention for a Champions League birth next season. Martinez also captained Spain on their way to the European Under 21 Championship last summer.

The Bilbao man reacted in a positive manner when talking about the recent rumours about his future. “These things [the rumours] are always going on in the world of football. Although it is very nice to be talked about in the newspapers, it is a product of what you are doing and says you’re doing things right.”

Liverpool’s recent Carling Cup victory means the Reds are guaranteed at least Europa League football and are still in with a shout of getting in on the final Champions League spot. This means that they will be able to attract big name players that they haven’t been able to in the last few seasons.

Their squad is bloated with central midfielders but Martinez definitely has the quality to force his way into the side, after all he is a Spanish midfielder. Any move for Martinez will eventually hinge on if they will be willing to pay such a transfer fee for a player who has yet to do the business with a major European club.

Manchester City defiantly have the financial muscle to buy the midfielder but their midfield is already teeming with top quality talent. Yet, it has been proven in recent seasons that if City are determined to get their man it is only a matter of time before they come in with a monster bid.
