The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been saying their goodbyes and showing their appreciation for their veteran Spanish defender, Jesus Gamez, who will be leaving St James Park as his contract expires. The 33-year-old spent two years on Tyneside after joining on a free in summer 2016 but made just three appearances in his final year with the Magpies.

Gamez was one of the Geordies’ first signings under Rafa Benitez and despite his lack of game time, he endeared himself to the fans with the manner of his professionalism on and off the pitch. In all honesty, the club won’t miss him on the pitch as DeAndre Yedlin has been the man responsible for holding up the right-hand side of the Newcastle defence, however, it seems he was a big character in the dressing room.
The departure of Gamez means that Newcastle will be looking to bring a new right-back in to share the load with Yedlin and to ensure that if the young American full-back gets injured or suspended that there’s someone who can step in, in his absence. The club will be looking to bring in a number of players this summer and they got the ball rolling when Rafa Benitez secured the permanent signing of Martin Dubravka.

Good luck Jesus, you’ll be missed. Thanks for your contributions.

Those 90mins at Swansea earlier in the season were the best I have ever seen from a full back in my life. All the best.
