The Ronaldinho to Liverpool transfer saga rumbles on this week, with rumours coming out of Italy today that Liverpool will offer the Milan midfield maestro a staggering £150,000 per week to convince him to come to Anfield.
That’s about £7.5m pa. In the Premiership, only Yaya Toure earns more (£10m pa.)
As for Ronaldinho’s would-be teammates: Steven Gerard is on £6m pa, while Fernando Torres and Joe Cole earn roughly £4m each.
So the Brazilian would become Liverpool’s highest earner by far; Liverpool fans, is he worth it? Playing as he does these days, never in a million years. However, if he were to recapture even a tenth of his form in previous years, he’d be worth double.
And maybe, just maybe, a change of scenery at a proud and ambitious club like Liverpool is just the place for a Ronaldinho resurgence. The club’s owners must at least feel the former world player of the year is worth taking a chance on; if reports are to be believed, then their declarations when taking over that they would not just start throwing money around to secure a quick fix seem a bit hollow.
As for Ronaldinho’s availability, it seems Liverpool wouldn’t have much difficulty in persuading Milan to let the player go. When asked by Gazzetta Dello Sport to comment on Ronaldinho’s future at the San Siro, and whether he believed the player would ask to leave in January, coach Massimiliano Allegri stated: “At Milan, we only want players who want to be here, neither myself nor the club would hold a player here against his will, it would be against our best interests.”
So he’ll probably be going somewhere next month, then, and Anfield is still a real possibility.
