The Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting a story from Alasdair Gold on football.london, claiming that the North London club is interested in Ajax young Dutch centre-half, Matthijs De Ligt. The youngster partnered Davison Sanchez last season for Ajax and started alongside the Colombian in the Europa League final loss to Manchester United.
The Tottenham fans propping our bar up are no stranger to a youth prospect as the club have developed an incredible reputation for turning youngsters into stars. The club’s record with youth spans from players like Kyle Walker, who stayed at White Hart Lane for ten years before leaving for Manchester City last summer as the Premier League’s best right-back, to the likes of Gareth Bale who joined as a timid young left-back and left as one of the world’s most dangerous forwards.
For a lot of young players, work needs to be done before their potential starts to show through. However, with De Ligt this isn’t the case. The Ajax academy product looks set to conquer European football one way or another and has looked competent, mature and full of talent in his short time in the Ajax senior team. The 2017/18 season is De Ligt’s second as a first-team regular and his performances at the heart of the Ajax defence have led to a number of Europe’s finest clubs turning their heads to look at the classy defender. If Spurs can get their man, he’ll be more than a replacement for the exiting Toby Alderweireld.
