The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are discussing who could be the long term solution to the left back problem. Leighton Baines has been an admirable servant for the Toffees over the past several years but he is coming towards the end of this career. Brendan Galloway’s progress has come to a halt and Luke Garbutt does not look like the man who will solve this issue.
Everton need to snap up a young, top class left back to ensure that they do not keep on having to play Cuco Martina in that department. Sam Allardyce will undoubtedly be looking this month to solve the problem.
And Everton have recently been linked with a move for Bayern Munich defender Juan Bernat, who is rated at a bargain £10.08m on Transfermarkt. This would be the perfect swoop for Everton. Bernat has plenty of experience of Bundesliga football and he has game time in the Champions League under his belt.
The 24-year-old also played in La Liga with Valencia prior to his move to Germany so he has knowledge of two of the top European leagues. A move to the Premier League could be the best for him as he looks for a new challenge in his career.
The 7-cap Spain international is small but assured at the back and he has the ability to get forward and help with attacks. Bernat is also comfortable playing as a winger and his attacking qualities would certainly help Everton’s attacking midfielders.
If the price is right, Everton should certainly look to make Bernat a long-term investment as the ideal replacement for Baines.
