The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to bring in some quality players this summer. The Blues have regressed significantly this season, despite winning the Premier League title last year, and that has clearly been a problem.
The blame can be pointed in a number of directions. You could look at general poor form, and you could look at Antonio Conte, but one facet of Chelsea this season that must be focused upon is their failings in the transfer market.
Whilst sides around them, like Man City, spent big to land top quality proven talent, the Blues failed to land many of their primary targets, with moves for inferior players made instead. That’s had a big impact on the club this season, with the likes of Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley struggling during the season.
This has frustrated fans, and it seems to have frustrated the players, too. Eden Hazard has seemingly confirmed as much, with the BBC revealing that the Belgian has urged the Chelsea board to sign good players this summer before he signs a new deal.
He said: “I’m waiting for new players next season…I want good players because I want to win the Premier League next season”.
Clearly, then, Hazard is only expecting the best to move to Stamford Bridge this summer – and it’s fair to say that the Chelsea fans over on Reddit aren’t feeling very optimistic.
They’ve taken to the platform to discuss the news, and whilst some are hopeful that it could force the board’s hand, others are expecting more of the same. Indeed, whilst supporters – and Hazard – are dreaming of huge names moving to Stamford Bridge this summer, the reality – according to some – is likely to be very different. Specifically, some fans are expecting moves for names like Ashley Young and Nacer Chadli – instead of the world-renowned stars that they are hoping for.
Ashley Young, of course, has had a fantastic season for Man Utd, but he’s hardly what the Blues need. Jose Mourinho has done a fantastic job bringing the best out of him, and he’s sure to have an impact for England this summer and at Old Trafford next season. However, it’s clear that he’s a bit of a square peg in a round hole, and it would be very indicative of Chelsea’s recent business to move for a player like him despite their current needs. For the Red Devils, he’s doing a great job, but signing him would represent the exact opposite of what Chelsea need to do this summer – they need youth, they need excitement and they need technical talent – and Young doesn’t provide that.
