The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern seem resigned to the fact that they will lose their star duo before next season. Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are both out of contract with Arsenal at the end of the season and will be available on a free transfer if they do not agree fresh terms.

Arsenal now have to decide whether to cash in on the duo now or risk losing them for free in a few months’ time. There is plenty of talk surrounding a possible January switch for Sanchez, with Manchester City leading the race for the Chilean international.

If Sanchez does depart this month, Arsenal need a replacement before the window slams shut. Riyad Mahrez should be at the top of their list. Many Premier League sides are interested in Mahrez but his style of play suits Arsenal and Arsene Wenger should be pressing ahead with this deal ahead of rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Leicester City winger has a wonderful left foot and is capable of scoring and providing goals, as proved when he won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and earned plenty of plaudits for his part in their title-winning campaign.

The 26-year-old is now entering the prime of his career and Arsenal should bring him in to benefit from this. Mahrez probably needs a move away from Leicester to further his career and the Gunners need to bring this type of player in to once again compete towards the top of the Premier League.

The slick and skilful Algerian international is a proven Premier League performer and would be a lot cheaper than some of the other options out there. Arsenal simply must think about bringing him in to fill the hole that will be left by the departures of Sanchez and Ozil.

Thoughts?
