The Aston Villa fans here in the Transfer Tavern are fully expecting to return to the Premier League this season. Indeed, life in the Championship hasn’t always been easy for the Midlands giants, though Steve Bruce looks to have worked his magic at the business end of their second campaign there.
With that in mind, our punters clad in claret and blue are already discussing potential summer signings to kickstart a dream return to the Premier League. Backed by fairly big money, Bruce would surely be able to attract fairly big names to Villa Park, if they do return.
Having said that, Villa could do a lot worse than raiding a local rival this summer. With West Bromwich Albion looking all but relegated, Bruce should seriously consider a swoop on their star striker, Solomon Rondon. The Venezuelan may have been powerless to prevent the Baggies from sliding into the second tier but it is, without doubt, a proven Premier League marksman and someone capable of leading the line.
Though Bruce currently has Scott Hogan, Lewis Grabban and Jonathan Kodija available in the central striking berths, Rondon is a level above any of them. Heading into the Premier League season with only the aforementioned trio would be a risk and letting slip an opportunity to strengthen your cause with such a talented player would be rather stupid indeed.
Valued at just £11.7m by Transfermarkt, Rondon could finally replace Christian Benteke at his best for Villa, as well as help lead their return to the proverbial Promised Land to great effect.
