Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting their first signing of the summer after Marco Silva was appointed as their new manager.
Sam Allardyce was finally relieved of his first-team duties following various fan protests which made his exit a foregone conclusion. The ex-England manager steadied the ship after Ronald Koeman’s departure but was not the right man to take the Blues forward. Instead, former Watford boss Silva will get the chance to revamp the Everton squad alongside new director of football, Marcel Brands.
The pair have a huge task on their hands to right the wrongs of last summer’s transfer window. The defence will be the main area of concern, especially left-back. Leighton Baines is approaching the end of his career and can no longer take the strain of a gruelling Premier League season, and Cuco Martina is not first-team quality.
Brands should look to the Bundesliga to sign Augsburg defender, Philipp Max, to replace Baines. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old is a fantastic attacking full-back that would excel in the Premier League. He picked up 13 assists in the Bundesliga last season, breaking the assist record for a defender, and created a staggering 75 chances.
Max is a significant upgrade on both Baines and Martina regarding statistics. According to Squawka, the German averaged more chances created and more key passes than both of Everton’s current defenders – highlighting the threat he poses from the back.
This one is a no-brainer.
