Manchester United finally appeared ready to begin to challenge for the title that has eluded them on such a regular basis since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but the dominance of Manchester City and Mourinho’s men inconsistent form has seen the Red Devils fall out of contention.
Fans of the Reds here in The Transfer Tavern are optimistic about their side’s future, and are extremely excited to see exactly what Mourinho will do in the coming weeks as he attempts to add further quality to his squad in the required areas. We love having the guys from Manchester visit us when in the capital, and the north western bunch are always seen to sit down and talk all things United.
Often found huddled around the dart board, our landlord sneaked in for a cheeky game to gauge the thoughts of United fans amidst the winter transfer window, and there exists a clear consensus that a top-quality central midfielder must be on Mourinho’s shopping list this month. The form of Ander Herrera has curtailed, and Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic need another man to partner them in the middle of the park. A number of names were touted, but several of the United lads were keen to see a move for Schalke’s, Leon Goretzka.
The midfielder’s contract is set to expire in the summer, with a whole hosts of clubs from across Europe said to be following the player. Bayern Munich are the latest to express an interest in the young German star, but United must be the ones to secure the signature of this hot talent. With a World Cup on the horizon, Goretzka may decide that a January move to a big club will all but secure his spot on the plane to Russia, and Old Trafford is the type of venue that will secure his status in Joaquim Lowe’s squad.
Liverpool have also been linked, though United need to ensure they win the race to land a man who can bring afford Mourinho the option of fielding a midfield three, bringing out the best in Paul Pobga.
The 22-year-old is of a perfect age to slot straight into the first-team set-up at Old Trafford and to be moulded into the type of player United require, and should be available for a nominal fee by United’s standards due to his contract status. Mourinho simply must make this transfer happen this month.
United fans, is Goretzka the right man for your midfield? Let us know!
