The Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern have told us that they expect Erik Sviatchenko to leave the club in the January transfer window. The Denmark international has barely featured this season under Brendan Rodgers and he is being chased by FC Copenhagen and a number of Championship clubs.
And while Marvin Compper has arrived from Red Bull Leipzig, Celtic fans are wondering whether another new addition will be brought in to add competition for places with Compper, Kristoffer Ajer, Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, especially if another player departs.
Celtic have recently been linked with a move for Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba and this would be a shrewd piece of business by Brendan Rodgers. Mbemba has drifted in and out of the Newcastle team over the past two seasons under Rafa Benitez and he could be tempted to move away if he is given first-team assurances elsewhere.
The DR Congo international is an assured defender who is confident with the ball at his feet and tough to beat in the air. He has shown maturity beyond his years in the Premier League and he would be an asset for Celtic in their charge towards the Scottish Premiership title.
Mbemba is also a leader at the back. He captains his country and is able to organise a defence, showing his all-round capabilities as a centre-half. The 23-year-old has plenty of experience under his belt, too, having played in Belgium and England as well as making 41 caps for his country despite his young age.
If Celtic are to continue to recruit with a view to strengthening their squad now and for the future, Newcastle’s Mbemba should be towards the top of their list.
