Chelsea fans here in the Tavern are awaiting their hotly anticipated Champions League clash with Barcelona, as it has the makings of becoming quite the spectacle.

The Blues head into their European clash with Spanish giants Barcelona in the next couple of weeks, as they aim to bypass the brilliance of Lionel Messi in a two-legged tie. Indeed, one of Chelsea’s worries heading into their encounter would be finding a way past their formidable defence, but they suffered a huge boost in doing so when one of Barca’s star players was ruled out of the first-leg. Indeed, according to reports from AS, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is set to miss their visit to Stamford Bridge due to injury.

Gerard Pique suffered a knee injury that’s set to see him miss the Champions League clash with Chelsea, a huge miss for the side from Cataluna as an iconic member both in their defensive unit and the team.

Nevertheless, a huge boost for the Blues as they head into the match as huge underdogs, and with some of the world’s best standing between them and a date with the quarter-finals, they’re going to need all the help they can get. Although, Barcelona are a team that many residents here in the Tavern will have happy memories of playing against, after a 3-2 aggregate win sent arms sprawling at the full-time whistle in the Nou Camp back in 2012.

Landlord’s Verdict:

There’s no doubt this is a huge boost for the Blues, as one of the world’s best defenders is set to sit out the all-important first-leg tie at Stamford Bridge. This could have a huge say in which way the tie swings, with the likes of Eden Hazard potentially causing a shallow Barcelona defence some problems. Although, with the firepower of Barca’s attack, defending is the first thing that Antonio Conte should have his players’ minds set firmly on completing.
