Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is keen to improve his squad over the course of the winter transfer window, with the club struggling towards the bottom of the table.

Just two points above the relegation spots, the Magpies are in trouble, and the Spaniard is in the market to add both quality and depth to his side this month. Fans here in The Transfer Tavern share their manager’s sentiment, and watch carefully as the former Real Madrid and Chelsea gaffer plots his next move. Rafa was told by club bosses that he must sell before he can buy, and recent reports from The Chronicle have suggested that the club’s slow progress transfer policy may have backfired, with target Dennis Praet set to join Juventus at the end of the season.

The Belgian had impressed in the Belgian top flight with giants Anderlecht, and Benitez was known to have been a key admirer of the one-time international. The 23-year-old has appeared to slip out of Newcastle’s reach however, with a move to the Serie A giants looking extremely likely.

Landlord’s Verdict: This was bound to happen eventually, with Newcastle’s unsustainable approach to the transfer market costing them the services of one of the most promising talents on the continent. A deal could have been sealed over a year ago, but the club’s refusal to spend has resulted in the player being lost.

The club’s hierarchy must buck up their ideas if they wish to see the club progress in the Premier League, and if the chequebook doesn’t begin to come out on a more regular basis, then Newcastle will be back in the Championship before you can say haway.
