Liverpool supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side concede a late leveller to end up drawing 2-2 with fellow Champions League chasers Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit off the back of easing past Huddersfield Town in their previous league outing, and with the knowledge that victory over Spurs would move them five points clear of their opponents in the race for a top four spot. And they looked on course to do just that as a Mohamed Salah brace gave them a 2-1 advantage heading into the dying minutes, only for Harry Kane to make amends for an earlier penalty miss by slotting home a 95th minute spot-kick to clinch a deserved point for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Thus, there have been some satisfied and some frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be further intrigued by a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, which details that a decision has been made regarding the Reds’ reported chase of Thomas Lemar ahead of the summer window.
The 22-year-old played a key part in Monaco’s success last season with 14 goals and 17 assists in all competitions, helping Leonardo Jardim’s men to the Ligue 1 title, and indeed the semi-finals of the Champions League.
And while things haven’t gone quite as well for the forward this term, the France international continued to attract interest up until and during the January window, with Klopp’s Liverpool reportedly one side keen on acquiring his services.
However, recent reports suggest that the Merseyside giants have made a decision over whether or not to pursue a deal for Lemar in the summer, with it reported that he is not on their shortlist ahead of the summer window.
And this news is likely to interest our resident Reds fans, several of whom feel the club need to make a signing of the calibre of Lemar to replace Philippe Coutinho, who was sold to Barcelona last month.
Landlord’s verdict: Thomas Lemar has been attracting interest from the Premier League for a while now, with both Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly keen on the 22-year-old in the last few months.
Yet the forward remains a Monaco player to this day, although recent news that he has not signed a new deal at the Stade Louis II intensified the speculation that he could be on the move to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in the summer, what with the Merseysiders reportedly interested during January.
Yet recent reports suggest that the Reds have decided against pursuing a summer move for Lemar, which is significant given that they did not replace Philippe Coutinho during the January window.
Only time will tell whether they have another big-name player on their shortlist heading into the summer.
