Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side throw away a one-goal advantage to lose 2-1 at Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, thus suffering a fifth successive away defeat.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the Clarets off the back of a 1-0 defeat at Watford in their previous league outing, which left the Toffees with just one win in their 14 away league games this season. And the Merseysiders’ woeful form on the road continued at Turf Moor on Saturday despite taking the lead through striker Cenk Tosun, with goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood sealing all three points for Sean Dyche’s side, in turn instigating Everton’s fall to 11th in the Premier League table.
Consequently, there have been several frustrated and angry Evertonians in the Tavern, many of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can get back to winning ways when they host Chris Hughton’s Brighton at Goodison Park this weekend.
But with the Toffees looking likely to be in the Premier League next season, some of our resident Everton fans are turning their attentions towards the summer, and thus who their side should look to sign to take them forward next time round.
And one man many believe would hugely benefit their squad, to the point that he would surely give them their strongest defence in years, is Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.
The 24-year-old has been in excellent form for the Magpies this term in the heart of their backline, appearing in 24 of their 29 Premier League games this season, with his absence from the other five as a result of injury.
Be it standing firm and authoritative in his own box to bagging key goals at the other, the Englishman has comfortably become the club’s best centre-back this season, and at the tender age of 24, he looks set for a very bright future in the game.
And that is why Everton simply must go after the young defender this summer.
The Toffees backline is certainly an aging one, what with Phil Jagielka turning 36 in August, and Leighton Baines and Ashley Williams both at the age of 33 – thus, Allardyce must start planning for the future, especially with all three out of contract in the summer of 2019 (as per Transfermarkt).
And Lascelles would certainly be a nod to that, and alongside the likes of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate, both of whom are hugely adept young centre-backs, the future would be very bright at Goodison Park ahead of a potentially big few years for the club, what with a new stadium in the offing.
And with Seamus Coleman down one side and Baines continuing to prove his worth down the other, landing Lascelles and pitting him alongside either one of Keane, Holgate, or even Ramiro Funes Mori in the heart of the Toffees defence would turn it from a solid one into a formidable one indeed.
As such, the Merseysiders simply must seek to land the £6.3 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, as doing so would give them their strongest defence in many a year.
