Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side’s miserable Premier League away record continue courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Saturday.

Sam Allardyce’s men went into their encounter with the Clarets off the back of a 1-0 loss at the hands of Watford in their preceding league outing, a result which stretched their winless away run to five games. And the Toffees’ woeful form on the road continued at Turf Moor on Saturday despite taking the lead through Cenk Tosun, with second half goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood sealing a first victory of 2018 for Sean Dyche’s side, thus instigating Everton’s fall to 11th in the Premier League table.

Thus, there have been many angry Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, yet they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which outlines some potentially great news for striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 20-year-old has been a regular for the Toffees this season with 39 appearances for the club in all competitions, in which time he has bagged an impressive eight goals and laid on six assists.

And while Saturday’s start against Burnley was his first in the league since the end of December, reports suggest that England manager Gareth Southgate has been impressed with what he has seen, as the England Under-20 World Cup winner is reportedly in consideration for a call-up to the senior squad for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy later this month.

And these welcoming reports are sure to delight Calvert-Lewin and indeed our resident Toffees fans, many of whom feel that the striker does deserve recognition for his efforts in the blue of Everton this term.

Landlord’s verdict: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of only a handful Everton players who can hold their head high this season, in what has been a desperately disappointing campaign for the Merseyside outfit.

And it looks as though his eight goals and six assists in 39 appearances could well earn him a surprise England call-up, as reports suggest that manager Gareth Southgate is considering selecting the 20-year-old for his side’s upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

And this is sure to come as great news to the Everton ace and indeed the club’s supporters, who are also likely to be absolutely thrilled were Calvert-Lewin to indeed be named in the squad later this month.
