The Liverpool fans have been in buoyant mood in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s incredibly impressive form both domestically and in Europe.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have secured their place in the semi-final of the Champions League and strengthened their grip on the top-four in recent weeks with a handful of quality performances. Lorius Karius has been Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper throughout the majority of 2018 so far and, although he had plenty of doubters when Klopp first gave him the nod over Simon Mignolet, the standard of his performances suggests Klopp may be willing to stick by him in the long-term future.

And recent reports from The Sun have further served to suggest that Karius has indeed managed to convince Klopp that he is worthy of keeping his place in the long-term, as the club are set to offer the German goalkeeper a new contract this summer to reward him for his fine form. Liverpool’s decision to offer him a new deal is one which will divide the Reds faithful propping up our bar in the tavern, as their interest in Roma goalkeeper Allison is likely to fade away if Karius agrees to a new deal.

Although there’s no doubting that Karius has been in decent form in recent months, it must be considered that the performance of Liverpool’s defensive unit as a whole has improved dramatically since the introduction of Andrew Robertson and the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk. The overall improvement in Liverpool’s defence has aided Karius’ reputation due to Liverpool’s refusal to surrender goal-scoring opportunities to the opposition.

With that in mind, Klopp should avoid handing Karius a new deal and instead focus on signing Roma’s Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson next season, otherwise Liverpool could be set for another season of falling short of the level which is required to top the table in the Premier League. Karius still has plenty to prove at the top level, whilst Alisson has established himself as Brazil’s number one goalkeeper ahead of Man City’s Ederson and earned a reputation as one of the world’s best stoppers after only one season as Roma’s first-choice keeper.

Liverpool are on the cusp of achieving a special season under Klopp, but they need to be wise in the transfer market to ensure they match the standard set by Man City next season. Replacing Karius with Alisson is a deal which Liverpool simply have to complete to step up the next level, so they should put discussion over a new deal on hold until they’ve tried to force a deal through for Serie A’s most in-demand goalkeeper.
