Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week in anticipation of their team’s clash with Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday, with the Reds hoping to become the first team to beat the Citizens in the league this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men go into the encounter in a good run of form themselves having won 12 and drawn five of their last 17 matches, a streak which has seen them move above both Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for fourth place. And the Merseyside giants also made progress in the FA Cup last weekend by beating bitter rivals Everton 2-1 in the third round, thus setting them up perfectly for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s high-flying City on Sunday.

Consequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, several of whom are relishing the prospect of their side coming up against the Citizens on Sunday, in a match many reckon they will win.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into recently, not least reports linking them with a move for Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

And while the Algeria star would be a good addition in their quest to replace Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool should be bolder and instead join the race for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, who looks almost certain to leave the club this month.

And that’s because the Chile star is exactly the sort of player the Reds have to be targeting and landing to get closer to the Premier League title, as he would make a huge difference at Anfield.

Ultimately, Sanchez has been absolutely magnificent for Arsenal in the last few years, with his 30 goals and 19 assists last term single-handedly propelling Arsene Wenger’s men to fifth place in the division, and playing an enormous part in their FA Cup triumph.

And while this season hasn’t necessarily been his best in a Gunners shirt, his tally of seven goals equals that of Mahrez, while the 29-year-old’s consistency has been there throughout his time at Arsenal in bagging at least 17 goals in each of his three completed campaigns, culminating in 80 goals in just 165 games for the club.

Losing Coutinho will undoubtedly be a blow to Klopp and Liverpool, as he was the sort of player that could make things happen out of nothing, score goals from anywhere in the final third, and produce that bit of magic either on a set play or in open play when his team needed it most.

And that sounds exactly like the Sanchez we saw last season for Arsenal.

And while Mahrez is another capable of those moments, questions may well be asked about his dip in form last season, and whether or not he can go from being the main man and orchestrator at Leicester into a Liverpool side with equally quality players around him.

None such questions will be asked of Sanchez as during his time at both Barcelona and now Arsenal, he has produced the goods, and is clearly looking for that next move to pursue his talents after a testing few months at the Emirates Stadium.

Add in his ability to play anywhere across the frontline, be it down the flanks, as the main man, or in the number ten, and Klopp suddenly has a frightening amount of options at his disposal.

While Mahrez would be a good signing, Sanchez would be an even better one, and one Liverpool must try to get done come January 31.
