Good news for Liverpool as preparations for Southampton clash ramp up

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side will pick up a win against Southampton this weekend. It’s set to be a big fixture for a number of reasons.

Most importantly, the Reds have been on a decent run as of late, and another three points will help to strengthen their position within the top four of the Premier League. You’ve also got the connections between Southampton and Liverpool to consider, and given that the Reds have taken many of the Saints’ best players in recent years, this is a game that they really ought to be winning.

Fortunately, ahead of the game, Jurgen Klopp has delivered a news update that is sure to please our resident Liverpool fans.

According to Klopp, the duo of Alberto Moreno and Ragnar Klavan are both set to be available for the game having returned to training. Joe Gomez is unfortunately likely to miss the game, but the Englishman is also said to be ‘close’ to a return, which is great news for Liverpool nonetheless.

Though not likely to be starters, both Moreno and Klavan play an important role for Liverpool. In their respective positions, Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have much choice, with Andy Robertson the only other option at left-back, whilst Virgil van Dijk is the only genuinely top-tier central defender at the German’s disposal. Given this lack of depth, the importance of depth cannot be understated, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see either play feature in some form come Sunday.

Gomez has enjoyed a solid season so far this term, and whilst his unavailability is a blow for the Reds, his return doesn’t appear to be too far off, which is good for Klopp.

Landlord’s Verdict

Liverpool’s squad isn’t loaded with depth, and so every return is a big bonus for Jurgen Klopp. He needs all the bodies that he can get.

Moreno has been replaced by Robertson in the first team, but there is still time for him to regain his place, whilst Klavan could be required in the near future if the Reds’ central defensive woes continue.
