Newcastle United fans have been reasonably cheerful in the Transfer Tavern during the international break such has been their side’s solid start to the season.

Rafa Benitez’s men have won three of their opening seven Premier League matches upon return to the top-flight, and a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool last time out further highlights the progress they are making under the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager.

The North East giants will be hoping for another three points on Sunday when they travel to Southampton, and several of our resident Magpies supporters, many of whom will be making the trip to St Mary’s, will likely be intrigued by some recent comments from Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez via Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old moved to St James’ Park back in 2014 and has since gone on to score 25 goals in 124 matches for the club, including nine last season to help Benitez’s men win promotion from the Championship.

And although he hasn’t been able to find the net this time round, the Spaniard continues to earn a regular place in the starting eleven so must be doing something right, yet it didn’t stop speculation continuing regarding his future on Tyneside.

However, the attacker has played down rumours linking him with a move away from Newcastle, saying: ‘I adapted myself really quickly to Newcastle, it’s a lovely city, the fans are amazing and the league is the best in the world.

‘I cannot ask for any more as I’m in the right place.’

These comments are sure to intrigue our resident Newcastle fans, many of whom have been somewhat critical of Perez during his time in the North East, but it’s clear that he remains firmly committed to the club, and will thus seek to improve his form over the coming weeks and months.

Landlord’s verdict: Ayoze Perez has only ever reached double figures in one season during his time at Newcastle United, and that was last term when he bagged 12 goals in all competitions.

And although he isn’t the most prolific of attackers, the 24-year-old is clearly respected by manager Rafa Benitez, whom has selected him in all seven of their Premier League games thus far despite Perez’s inability to register a goal.

The Spaniard has been at St James’ Park since 2014 but has been linked with a move away in recent times, something Perez has categorically ruled out happening any time soon given his love for the city, and his love for the Premier League.

And while some Magpies fans have been critical of him this term, he continues to give his all for the shirt, and looks set for a sustained run in the side over the coming weeks.

Newcastle fans… what do you make of the news? Let us know!
