Newcastle United fans have been reasonably buoyant in the Transfer Tavern during the international break following their side’s fine start to the season.

The North East giants have won three of their opening seven Premier League matches upon return to the top tier, and their credible 1-1 draw with Liverpool last time out further exemplifies the progress they are making under manager Rafa Benitez.

And our resident Magpies supporters will be hoping for another three points at Southampton on Sunday, and they may well be interested in a recent report from Calcio Mercato, which outlines some intriguing information regarding the future of Sampdoria’s Dennis Praet, a reported target of the Magpies over the summer.

The 23-year-old moved to the Serie A side back in 2016 after a long association with Belgian giants Anderlecht, and the midfielder has since gone on to become an important part of the squad at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The one-time Belgium international has played 41 matches for Sampdoria and has started all six of their Serie A clashes so far this season, and was reportedly targeted by Benitez’s Newcastle during the summer as they sought to improve their midfield options.

And recent reports suggest that a January deal remains a possibility, as the Magpies only need to improve their reported €20 million summer offer by €5 million to meet Praet’s release clause, and with the man himself reportedly refusing to rule out a future move to England in the future, it’s a deal which could certainly take place.

But whether Newcastle indeed increase their offer in the winter remains to be seen, but with reported interest from Germany and Italy in the 23-year-old as well, time is of the essence in pursuit of the midfield sensation.

Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United endured a frustrating summer in which they struggled to get targets through the door at St James’ Park, leading many to believe that a season of difficulty was the follow.

Their start suggests anything but, yet reports recently suggest that Sampdoria’s Dennis Praet was one man they wanted to bring to the North East, but were unable to get a deal done.

However, it seems that the Magpies will only need to increase their initial offer by €5 million to trigger his release clause, and were they to do that the 23-year-old would have much to consider, what with it reported that he is interested in a move to the Premier League.

Germany and Italian interest could force Newcastle to act quickly in January, otherwise they could well miss out on the young midfielder, which is likely only to add to Benitez’s transfer frustration.
