The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Andreas Christensen to be given a chance this season…
The Danish defender is arguably one of Chelsea’s brightest talents, but it hasn’t been a particularly prolific start to the season for him. Antonio Rudiger has been a regular in place of Gary Cahill this term, leaving Christensen to warm the bench.
Of course, the season is still young, and so Antonio Conte has time to embed him within the side – but its time for him to be trusted on a more regular basis.
There’s no question that Christensen is one of Chelsea’s best young defenders. Whilst on loan with Borussia Monchengladbach, the Dane impressed both domestically and in the Champions League, and that speaks volumes about his quality. By all accounts, he’s still a wonderkid – a player with limitless potential – but he has proven his worth as a solid option in the present too. The occasional minutes that he’s seen so far this season have proven that further, and that wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by Antonio Conte.
A solid, ball-playing centre-half, Christensen could learn so much from playing alongside David Luiz this season, and with the Brazilian now in his 30s, the Dane could be the perfect successor. Against Qarabag last night, most fans wouldn’t have recognised that he had stepped in for Luiz – and that speaks volumes of his quality.
Christensen hasn’t come back from playing regularly in Germany to be a bit-part player at Stamford Bridge. Of course, there will be a period in which he is waiting for his chance, but over the next few weeks he needs to be given that opportunity – and he will undoubtedly take it with both hands.
