Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after becoming the first team to beat leaders Manchester City in the Premier League this season courtesy of a thrilling 4-3 success at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the runaway table-toppers off the back of a 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions, a streak which has fired them firmly into contention for a top four spot in the Premier League. And the Reds strengthened their grip on a Champions League place as goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah secured the three points for the Merseyside giants, in turn inflicting a first loss of the campaign on Pep Guardiola’s City, although they still remain hot favourites to go on and win the title come May.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, yet they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, which suggests that their club are fearing the worst in pursuit of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The 22-year-old is out of contract at the Bundesliga club in the summer and doesn’t look like signing an extension, throwing into doubt his future at the side amid intense interest from several top European clubs.
Klopp’s Liverpool have been one team reportedly linked with the Germany international in the last few months, as they seek midfield reinforcements following the sale of Philippe Coutinho, and the likely departure of Emre Can, be it this month or in the summer.
Yet recent reports suggest that the Merseysiders are fearing the worst as they ‘believe’ that Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich will sign Goretzka, thus striking a blow into Klopp’s plans to strengthen his midfield options at Anfield.
Landlord’s verdict: With Philippe Coutinho gone and Emre Can likely to follow him out of the Anfield exit door, be it now or in the summer, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is likely looking at how he can bolster his midfield ranks this month.
Naby Keita will make the move from Leipzig in the summer but the Reds could be lightweight in the months prior to that, so it’s unsurprisingly that they are in for Schalke’s Leon Goretzka, whose contract expires at the end of the campaign.
However, the Reds are reportedly fearing the worst as they ‘believe’ that the 22-year-old will make the move to Bayern Munich, and while a deal has yet to be confirmed by either party, there appears to be a sense of resignation at Liverpool that they have missed out on a supremely talented midfielder.
