Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side secure three victories in a week prior to the international break, two of which helped move them up to fifth place in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men comfortably beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at Anfield little over a fortnight ago before backing that up a few days later with an equally comprehensive success over Maribor in the Champions League, thus setting them up perfectly for their trip to struggling West Ham. And the Reds made it three wins in the space of seven days as a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as first league goals of the season for Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sealed an easy 4-1 win for Klopp’s men, which in turn moved them above Arsenal into fifth place in the Premier League table.
Consequently, our resident Liverpudlians have been in fine voice in the Tavern this week, although their mood could well change if a recent report from Il Messaggero (via talkSPORT) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that Reds target Stefan De Vrij has penned a new three-year deal with current club Lazio, although he may not have completely quashed speculation about his future given that it reportedly contains a £27 million release clause.
The Netherlands international moved to the Italian giants back in 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength in the heart of their defence, appearing 84 times for the club and netting five goals in the process.
And with ten Serie A appearances so far this term, in which Lazio have made a fine start to the new season, the 25-year-old continues to impress, so much so that there has been reported interest from Klopp’s Liverpool and Juventus in recent times given that his current deal is due to expire in the summer.
Yet both sides have been dealt somewhat of a blow as De Vrij has reportedly agreed a new contract with Lazio, yet reports also suggest that a £27 million release clause has been inserted into his new deal.
And that is a sum of money which may not put Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy off in their quest for defensive reinforcements.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s defensive problems have been well-documented for a while now, and with 17 goals conceded in their 11 Premier League matches so far this season, they don’t appear to be getting any better.
So reports that they were interested in Lazio centre-back Stefan De Vrij aren’t overly surprising, but their pursuit of the 25-year-old has possibly taken a slight hit as he has reportedly agreed a new deal with the Italian giants.
However, it’s not all bad news for Klopp and co as reports suggest that a release clause of £27 million will be a part of the new deal, and given that Virgil van Dijk could cost almost double that from Southampton, the Reds shouldn’t completely disregard a move for De Vrij just yet.
