Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team tighten their grip on a top four spot in the Premier League courtesy of a 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their meeting with the South Coast outfit off the back of reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the Reds beating Manchester City 2-1 on Tuesday night and indeed 5-1 on aggregate to book their place in the last four, where they will face Roma. And the Merseyside giants returned to league matters with another routine victory on Saturday as goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino clinched all three points for Klopp’s side at Anfield, thus keeping them ten points clear of fifth place Chelsea in the race for a top four spot.

As such, there have been many buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can continue their fine form between now and the end of the season.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski this summer.

And while there is little doubting that the 23-year-old would be a fine addition to Klopp’s squad, they should forget about a move for the Poland international, as £27 million-rated ace Victor Wanyama (as per Transfermarkt) would surely be the perfect partner for Naby Keita next season.

Ultimately, the Reds have already secured a deal to bring Guinea international Keita to Anfield next season, a deal which has hugely excited our resident Liverpool fans given the amount of talent and indeed potential the 23-year-old has at his disposal.

However, the RB Leipzig star is a more forward-thinking midfield player, and many feel that although he is sure to be a fantastic addition, the Reds are ideally in need of someone more defensive-minded and industrious in the middle of the park alongside Keita next term to help with their defensive frailties.

Zielinski doesn’t appear to be the answer to that particular conundrum, yet there’s little doubting that Wanyama could be.

The Tottenham ace was integral in helping Mauricio Pochettino’s side to second place in the Premier League last season, striking up a formidable partnership with Mousa Dembele in what was arguably the finest central midfield duo in the division behind Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.

And the Kenya international would do exactly what appears to be missing in that Reds midfield in offering protection in front of the back four and breaking up play in the middle, as well as providing quality on the ball to help launch attacks and get the ball to the front men.

Whereas Zielinski is clearly hugely adept at getting forward and contributing in the final third, his defensive discipline is somewhat lacking, so while he would be a great addition, his arrival wouldn’t necessarily heal their weakness in the middle of the park.

Yet Wanyama’s arrival would, and with the 26-year-old seemingly struggling to get back into Pochettino’s starting eleven following injury in the first half of the campaign, the Reds may sense an opportunity – they have been linked with the midfielder in recent times.

As such, Klopp and FSG should forget about a move for Napoli’s Zielinski this summer, and instead focus their efforts on luring Wanyama to Anfield to thus provide the perfect midfield partner for Keita next season.
