Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to get their Southampton loyalty card out again this summer.
The most trodden path in the Premier League for transfers is that up the M6 from Southampton to Liverpool. Indeed, over the years no more than eight players (Paul Jones, Peter Crouch, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Virgil Van Dijk) have joined from the Saints in the Premier League era totalling close to £200m.
With Southampton currently locked in a relegation battle and struggling for wins and goals, it seems possibly inevitable to some of our regulars that the Saints’ time in the top flight is nearing an end unless a miracle second half of the season happens.
If that is the case, then there will be no doubt that Liverpool could come hunting for some summer bargains on the south coast once again. With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at two potential players that could round up the transfers to ten this summer…
With Jurgen Klopp’s inability to make a concrete decision in regards to a goalkeeping number one, the need for an upgrade to what they currently have is a must in the summer.
Forster is just that, and the England international will be eager to keep within the top flight of English football should the Saints go down. Our regulars in the bar would welcome the former Celtic man and it would surely see some much-needed consistency in between the sticks.
The 23-year-old midfielder can play in the centre of the park or out on the right and has certainly been in the goals of late. Having been useful and dangerous in the latter of the positions, he plays to his strengths of crossing and linking the play, as well as boasting a wicked set-piece delivery.
Klopp shouldn’t need more attack-minded players in his squad, however, the need for strength in depth is crucial in the Premier League and especially if he wants to challenge on all fronts again next season. Ward-Prowse would be a welcome addition to Anfield with his skill and dynamic style.
