Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to add quality to his side over the course of the next two transfer windows, as the club struggle to maintain pace with league leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Jose’s men have held their own in second place but have stumbled along the way, with the Portuguese keen to ensure he acquires the appropriate men to ensure his side return to a position of competing for the top prize in English football. Fans here at The Transfer Tavern know that their side are not a million miles away from finding that winning formula, with four or five more additions to the squad required to transform the club into contenders. Our landlord sat down with United fans between games of pool to talk transfers, with United fans quick to share their thoughts on the club’s potential targets. One fan spoke above the rest however, with his frustration clear in regard to Napoli winger, Dries Mertens.

The Belgian forward was absolutely phenomenal for the Serie A side last season, scoring mind-boggling twenty-eight goals from as many starts in the league, as well as adding a further nine assists as Napoli ran riot. Also bagging five in just six Champions League starts as well as two assists, the 30-year-old established himself as one of the deadliest player in Europe last season. Mertens has continued his fine form this season, scoring ten times and assisting a further six in the league, as well as five more goals and assists in Europe’s premier competition.

Reports emerged recently that Napoli are frantically attempting to arrange a new contract with the player due to his buyout clause being set at a paltry €28m, and our United fan just cannot believe the Red Devils aren’t stumping up the cash to activate the clause before it disappears. Mertens would be a wonderful addition to the side at Old Trafford, and if Mourinho can work fast, perhaps he can convince the man set to torment the English defence at the World Cup this summer that his future lies in the north west of England.

United fans, surely a swoop for Mertens is a no-brainer? Let us know!
