The Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are absolutely fuming about yesterday’s loss away at Newcastle United and largely blame their two England international centre-backs for the grim day at St. James’ Park. Indeed, with Eric Bailly out of contention with injury, the pair continue to look lost at the heart of United’s defence.
With that in mind, our resident Red Devils are eager to see the club strengthen in that area over the course of the summer window. Though Jose Mourinho continues to fight for the FA Cup and the Champions League this season, Premier League leaders Manchester City look a cut above their neighbours and few would doubt the fact that United need more signings to keep up.
So, having said that, they could do a lot worse than moving for their most recent opposition’s skipper. In light of the struggles of Smalling and Jones, who look like they could soon drop out of the Three Lions’ set-up, Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles continues to impress.
The former Nottingham Forest man has grown from a shaky Championship defender into a leading Premier League captain under Rafa Benitez’s watch and is surely in line for a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s national team. While he doesn’t over complicate things and run with the ball at his feet too much, the 24-year-old can marshall a backline and get things in order with relative ease.
Seemingly unfazed by the mess behind the scenes on St. James’ Park, Lascelles is a natural leader and every inch an archetypal Mourinho defender. Rated at a relatively paltry £6.3m by Transfermarkt, he’d be a wonderful addition at Old Trafford.
