Ever since their win over Manchester City at the Etihad, the Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been excited about next season. Indeed, while the punters propping up our bar were disappointed to see the club fail to challenge Pep Guardiola’s men for the title, though beating them in their own backyard has at least raised a small degree of excitement.

With that in mind, our resident Red Devils are counting down the minutes until the summer transfer window opens. Despite the huge amounts of money spent on revamping the squad in recent years, it’s clear that Jose Mourinho needs a few more players ahead of next season.

To that end, recent links with a move for Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti have proven rather promising. Indeed, Umtiti is clearly a wonderful defender and one capable of significantly improving United’s backline should he arrive, with neither Chris Smalling or Phil Jones proving a worthy partner for Eric Bailly this season.

The Frenchman boasts the kind of pace United would need in order to improve their style of play next season, allowing the team to push further forward while still having the kind of defensive insurance Mourinho likes. As you can imagine, having played with the Blaugrana for a few years now, he’s also hugely comfortable on the ball and can help start attacks from deep.

Clearly, he’d be a great signing on the pitch. In fact, he’d be a great one off it, too. For a few years now, the notion that both Barcelona and Real Madrid can simply sign who they want whenever they make their interest clear has been widely accepted and United have fallen some way behind their continental counterparts when it comes to attracting top players.

If they can steal Umtiti, who is an important figure over at the Camp Nou, United would go some way into proving they are back amongst the elite. It’d be a huge coup for Ed Woodward too, as well as give Jose Mourinho one of the best defenders in Europe.
