The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are sweating on the fitness of N’Golo Kante at present…
The Frenchman suffered an injury a few days ago whilst representing France, and though the length of the blow is yet to be confirmed, the midfielder remains a doubt for Chelsea’s next game against Crystal Palace.
Fortunately, though, Chelsea do have options, and our landlord thinks that it won’t be a problem for Antonio Conte to lose out on Kante this time around.
The obvious choice, of course, would be the duo of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas. In this instance, Bakayoko would likely become the more defensive of the pair, and Conte shouldn’t be worried about that. He’s a solid player defensively, offering a physical presence, aerial dominance and a fantastic engine to boot. Significantly Squawka also notes that he has yet to make a defensive error this season.
What’s more, Cesc Fabregas has improved at the back this season, and whilst he’s still no Kante, he will be able to fill in for Bakayoko if he gets out of position.
Chelsea could also turn to Danny Drinkwater. Yet to play a game for the Blues, according to the Telegraph he is approaching fitness, and he could be more of a direct replacement. Again, he’s not quite as strong defensively, but he is arguably more efficient than Bakayoko in the role, and if charged with that by Conte, he’ll no doubt impress. Likewise, he’s a fantastic passer of the ball and would be great alongside either Bakayoko or Fabregas.
Significantly, Crystal Palace are no Man City or Tottenham. Their offensve threat is very minimal, particularly on current form, and so Chelsea won’t have too many worries defensively – with or without Kante.
