Newcastle United and West Ham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their sides suffer disappointing defeats in the Premier League just prior to the two-week break for internationals.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle won four of their opening ten league matches prior to the visit of Bournemouth in their last outing, but they suffered a second successive loss as Steve Cook’s late header was enough to seal a 1-0 win for Eddie Howe’s Cherries. And things weren’t much better in East London either as the Hammers went down 4-1 at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at the London Stadium, with a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as strikes from Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain securing a comfortable victory for the Reds, a result which brought about the end for manager Slaven Bilic.
Thus, both sets of supporters have been particularly quiet in the Tavern in recent days, but they may just be encouraged by a recent report from Marca, which suggests that both teams are lining up a move for Villarreal hotshot Cedric Bakambu.
The 26-year-old made the move to the La Liga outfit back in 2015 and have since gone from strength to strength with an impressive 42 goals in just 98 games for the club, nine of which have come in the early stages of this season to underline his incredible goal-scoring prowess.
Thus, the DR Congo international is well on the way to surpassing his tally of 11 goals from last season, and it’s form which has reportedly attracted the interest of Benitez’s Newcastle and David Moyes’ West Ham, both of whom have reportedly sent scouts to monitor Bakambu’s progress.
But whether either side have the financial power to tempt Villarreal into selling their striking ace very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Both Newcastle United and West Ham have struggled somewhat in the striking department this season, netting just 21 goals between them in the Premier League so far this term.
So it’s not overly surprising to see them linked with an in-form striker, namely that of Villarreal’s Cedric Bakambu, who has already scored eight goals in just ten La Liga matches for the club this time round, helping them to fifth place in the table.
The Hammers reportedly sought out the 26-year-old during the summer but were unable to get a deal done, but with both clubs finding life difficult in front of goal, they could look to break the bank to bring the DR Congo international to the the English top-flight during the January window.
And breaking the bank may be what they need to do to convince Villarreal into selling one of their prized assets.
