West Ham fans were in good spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

The East London outfit slipped back into the bottom three last time out following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Tottenham, but Slaven Bilic’s men responded with a 1-0 success over Swansea City on Saturday, with Diafra Sakho netting the winner in the final minute.

That lifted the Hammers up to 15th and improved the mood among our resident West Ham supporters, but they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by recent reports from Italy (via ClubCall), which outlines some intriguing information about the race for SPAL defender Francesco Vicari.

The 23-year-old moved to the newly-promoted outfit back in 2016 and then proceeded to help them win the Serie B title last term with 34 league appearances at centre-back, helping them to the second best defensive record in the division.

And he has started this season in similar vein with seven successive starts in the top-flight, in which time the former Italy Under-21 international has helped them to five points, the latest coming courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Crotone at the weekend.

And it was at that match that a Watford scout was reportedly present to keep an eye on Vicari, as were scouts from Italian giants Juventus and Russian Premier League side Krasnodar.

Thus, the Hammers, who reportedly held an interest last month, may face quite the fight to land their man in the January transfer window, and if he continues to impress for SPAL between now and the New Year, other suitors may also join the chase.

Landlord’s verdict: West Ham have already conceded 13 goals in the Premier League this season, only basement side Crystal Palace (17) have conceded more.

Thus, the defensive department is likely one that manager Slaven Bilic will seek to improve in the January transfer window, yet he looks set to face a huge battle to lure SPAL centre-back Francesco Vicari to the London Stadium.

And that’s because scouts from Juventus, Krasnodar, and Watford were all present at the 23-year-old’s last match to suggest that they may well be considering a move for the defender come the New Year.

As such, the Hammers will have to act fast if they want to bring Vicari to East London.
