The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Antonio Conte to bring in a new striker in January. The Blues have lacked firepower this season, especially in recent weeks. Alvaro Morata has stumbled after a very solid start to life in the Premier League, and that has exposed Chelsea’s deficiencies.
Recruiting further depth in the role, then, is likely to be near the top of Antonio Conte’s winter wishlist. The Italian has no doubt drawn up a shortlist of a few potential options, but one name that appears to be a popular amongst Chelsea fans is that of Christian Benteke.
Our landlord recently polled fans on the prospect of the Belgian moving to Stamford Bridge, and 65% of fans responded with a resounding yes on the matter. Conversely, just 35% of fans voted against the idea of a move for the striker.
It’s likely that those that voted against the idea of Benteke moving to Stamford Bridge have drawn on his poor form this season, but it’s important that you look at the wider picture.
Crystal Palace, collectively, have struggled this season, with Roy Hodgson still far from securing his side’s position in the Premier League this term. When you look beyond this year, to last season for example, Benteke’s qualities come to the foreground. He bagged a remarkable 15 league goals last term, which is a testament to his quality.
He’d offer something different to Alvaro Morata, in that he’s fantastic target man – given that he stands at a towering 6ft2.
Whether Conte moves for him is another topic entirely, but it appears as though most fans are behind the deal.
