The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling confident about their chances of qualifying for the Champions League this season by winning the Europa League, but they are hoping to qualify for Europe’s greatest club competition via their league position next time round.
With Arsenal cut adrift of the top-four, their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League this season rest solely on their Europa League campaign, much to the frustration of the resident Gunners faithful propping up our bar. Arsene Wenger’s side have not discovered the consistency or the quality that is required to compete for the top-four this season, so there’s no doubt that the club will need to invest in new talent this summer to change their fortunes during the next campaign.
According to reports from the Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Arsenal are lining up a move for Barcelona’s wonderkid Ousmane Dembele (valued at £72 million by Transfermarkt) next summer despite the fact he only joined the Catalan giants last summer in a deal worth £103.5 million.
The report claims that Dembele’s lack of first-team opportunities this season have provoked a genuine cause for concern for a player who is averse to the idea of playing a bit-part role at Barcelona next season.
Although the prospect of signing Dembele on a permanent deal is an appealing one for Arsenal supporters, it is far from a realistic one considering he only recently moved to Barcelona, but that should not deter the club from trying to sign the French international on loan next summer.
Dembele is one of the most gifted young players on the planet right now, but he is still in the early stages of his footballing development and, that often becomes apparent with his naive decision-making.
The only way for the 20-year-old to improve his end product and his decision-making in the final-third is through first-team opportunities, so if Arsenal are willing to guarantee him a regular starting berth he might be willing to make a temporary switch next season.
The quality that Dembele would provide alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrik Mkhitaryan would undoubtedly give Arsenal a fantastic opportunity to return to the top-four, so Wenger should shortly begin exploring the possibility of bringing Barcelona’s prodigy to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
