Southampton fans here in the Tavern are praying that their side can avoid the dreaded clutches of the relegation zone, as the race for survival begins to heat up.
The Saints have looked a different team under the guidance of Mauricio Pellegrino this season, as many of our local residents are still coming to grips with the unfortunate situation they currently find themselves in. Although, games against fellow relegation contenders Newcastle United and West Ham United are up next in the Premier League, with these two matches having a huge say in whether the saints have a future in the top-flight.
However, if they do manage to pull through in the last nine games of the season then it will be seen as a great achievement, as the club can then look to build for a successful future at St Mary’s. Although, sadly for Mauricio Pellegrino it looks as if the end of the current season will bring his Southampton reign to a close, with the Saints looking to ensure Premier League security for years to come on the south coast.
Therefore, the club’s hierarchy will look to bring in a new manager swiftly to prepare for the challenges ahead, so here’s TWO managers that they must look to consider if they stay up…
Since venturing north of the border to Celtic in the summer of 2016 Brendan Rodgers has restored his reputation, as the 45-year-old managed to bag a treble during his debut season at Celtic Park. And, the Hoops look on course for securing yet another treble this campaign, to go with the impressive 69-game unbeaten domestic record that came to an end last December.
Brendan Rodgers may be loving life over in Scotland but you feel that the next step in his career has to be in the Premier League, and the Saints have bags of cash with the potential of building for success if they stay up this season.
Indeed, an attacking approach has died down this season on the south coast which could be down to the management of Pellegrino, so bringing Rodgers’ strong man-management skills and an attacking preference would definitely benefit Southampton. And, the prospect of welcoming Rodgers to the club has delighted many of our locals here in the Tavern, after seeing the magic he’s worked so far in Scotland.
Eddie Howe is one of the most highly-rated young British managers in the game today, as the current boss of Saints’ south coast rivals Bournemouth. Although, the Englishman is in a battle of his own this season as the Cherries have encountered difficulties that could still put their Premier League future at risk.
Indeed, back in 2016 Eddie Howe was on Southampton’s managerial shortlist at one point as they looked to replace Ronald Koeman, but nothing came of this as he’s stayed with the Cherries to this date. Although, many of our locals believe that Eddie Howe could be the man to bring European football back to St Mary’s, something that’s been dearly missed on the south coast in the current campaign.
However, if Southampton can ensure survival at the end of the season then they could look to make a move for Howe, with bags of money still to be spent from the Virgil Van Dijk deal, and a better chance of progression with the Saints.
