Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been showing their affection for their manager, Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard, who’s managed Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid, was appointed as the Toon Army’s gaffer back in March 2016 as Steve McClaren’s replacement and has quickly become a well-loved figure in the Northeast.

Benitez took to Twitter last night to congratulate the Newcastle U23 side who beat the club’s arch-rivals, Sunderland U23s to progress to the Premier League International Cup semi-finals. The game was a Tynewear classic, as Newcastle equalised in the 92nd minute through Callum Roberts before going on to win 11-10 on penalties after 120 minutes of football couldn’t separate the sides at 2-2.

The result means the young Magpies will face Porto B in the next round of the competition. Rafa Benitez was quick to congratulate the side on their fantastic battling victory over neighbours, Sunderland, and took to Twitter to show his support. His congratulatory tweet led to responses from members of the Toon Army showing their love for the 57-year-old. Benitez will be hoping he can keep the club’s fans onside as he aims to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.
