Liverpool supporters are in buoyant mood in the Transfer Tavern this week in anticipation of their team’s clash with Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday, with many of them confident that their side can be the first to beat the Citizens in the league this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men go into the encounter at Anfield off the back of a 17-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, a run which has seen them shoot above both Arsenal and Tottenham into fourth place in the Premier League table. And the Reds also got their FA Cup campaign off to a fine start last weekend with a 2-1 success over Merseyside rivals Everton, thus setting them up perfectly for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City side on Sunday.
Subsequently, there are many positive and confident Liverpudlians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Express, which suggests that ‘talks’ are underway to bring Leicester City ace Riyad Mahrez to the club this month.
The 26-year-old winger has gone from strength to strength at the King Power Stadium in recent times, none more so than during the 2015/16 campaign in which he scored 17 goals and laid on ten assists to help the Foxes win the title, the season in which he was named PFA Player of the Year.
And while things haven’t quite been as successful for the Algeria star since then, he continues to prove his worth to Claude Puel’s side, and reports recently have linked him with a move to Liverpool in a bid to replace Philippe Coutinho, who moved to Barcelona earlier this week.
And recent reports suggest that ‘talks’ are underway between the two parties over a possible move for Mahrez, with manager Klopp seemingly seeing the 26-year-old as the ideal man to fill the void left by Coutinho.
Landlord’s verdict: Philippe Coutinho is finally a Barcelona player after months of speculation, leaving Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with a sizable gap to fill in his starting eleven.
As such, several names have been linked with the Reds in recent times, none more so than Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, scorer of seven goals and provider of eight assists in 22 Premier League appearances this term.
And recent reports suggest that ‘talks’ are underway between the two parties, although one potential drawback is that Mahrez is reportedly keen on a move to Arsenal, who themselves could be on the lookout for attacking talent were Alexis Sanchez to move on this month.
Thus, Klopp may have to act fast to lure the 26-year-old to Anfield.
