Despite his flurry of goals against Rochdale, the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are in agreement that Fernando Llorente’s time in London is coming to an end. The Spaniard has failed to adjust to life at Spurs following a move from Swansea, and at this point, a departure looks inevitable.
Mauricio Pochettino, then, needs to be looking at bringing in another forward, and whilst a big money target could be in his plans, our landlord thinks that he should try his hand at a bit of a transfer risk – as the rewards could be massive. It would be bold, certainly, but our landlord thinks that Pochettino should try and move for Jackson Martinez.
According to a report from Goal at the start of the month, the forward is now effectively a free agent after being left out of his Guangzhou Evergrande’s squad and whilst that will signal some red flags, you only have to look back a couple of years to recognise just how good he can be. Between 2012 and 2015, he was simply sensational for Porto. Bagging a remarkable 67 goals in 90 games, little else needs to be said about his quality in front of goal. Sure, it hasn’t been easy over the last few years – with poor spells in both Spain and China following his stint in Portugal – but you can’t really use a year in Spain and a few years in the Chinese Super League as a marker for his talent.
Significantly, given that he has been effectively released, a move would pose little risk for Spurs. He’d be available on a free transfer, and so perhaps a short 6-month deal would provide Pochettino with ample time to recognise what he’s got. If anyone’s going to get him back in form, then the Argentine manager is the man to do it. They don’t have to make a move for him now, but perhaps they could assess him in the form of a trial.
Certainly, there are more high profile options, and his injury record is a concern, but if Tottenham take this risk, it could prove to be one of their best deals in a very long time.
