Tottenham supporters have been in pretty high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side begin their quest for a first FA Cup title since 1991 with a routine 3-0 success over AFC Wimbledon at Wembley last weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men haven’t won a trophy since lifting the League Cup back in 2008, which means they are enduring a longer silverware drought than North London rivals Arsenal did during their infamous barren spell between 2005 and 2014. Yet Spurs got off to the perfect start in this season’s FA Cup as a brace from Harry Kane as well as a Jan Vertonghen strike were enough to secure a comfortable victory over Neal Ardley’s Dons, thus booking Pochettino’s side a clash with Newport County in round four.
Thus, there have been many upbeat Tottenham fans in the Tavern this week, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Calcio Mercato, which suggests that reported Spurs target Suso could be a ‘possibility’ for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool this month.
The 24-year-old came up through the ranks at Anfield but only mustered 21 senior appearances for the Reds, before leaving the club back in 2015 at the expiration of his contract.
Since then, the midfielder has seriously impressed for Italian giants AC Milan with 14 goals and 21 assists in 72 appearances for the club, seven goals and nine assists of which have come this term in what has ultimately been a frustrating campaign for Gennaro Gattuso’s men.
Nonetheless, Suso must be doing something right as Tottenham are reportedly keen on bringing him back to England, although they could well have a fight on their hands as recent reports suggest that a return to Liverpool is a ‘possibility’ following their sale of Philippe Coutinho.
And while reports confirm that no contact has been made by the Merseysiders for the 24-year-old, this news is unlikely to be well received by Spurs fans, not least manager Pochettino.
Landlord’s verdict: It didn’t work out for Suso at Liverpool earlier in his career, yet the 24-year-old deserves huge credit for resurrecting his career at AC Milan in the last two years.
The midfielder has scored 14 goals and laid on 21 assists in 72 games for the Italian giants, and with several impressive performances this season, he could well be a man in-demand for the rest of the January window.
And that is sure to come as a blow to Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who himself may have viewed Suso as the ideal alternative to Ross Barkley, who moved to Chelsea last week.
