The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern were bitterly disappointed to miss out on the signing of Ross Barkley last week.
Ross Barkley completed a move from Everton to Chelsea on Friday despite the fact he had turned The Blues down in the summer of 2017. Plenty of the resident Lilywhites in the tavern have been berating Daniel Levy’s strict wage policy over the weekend after Tottenham reportedly withdrew their interest in Barkley due to concerns over his wage demands.
Now that Barkley has completed his transfer to Tottenham’s London-rivals, it is important for Pochettino to work with Levy in order to identify a potential alternative target to pursue this month.
And according to reports in The Daily Express, Tottenham have already focused their attention on Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes this month.
The former Valencia star predominantly plays as a central midfielder, although he is also comfortable playing on the left-hand side of the pitch.
Since his move from Valencia in the summer of 2016, Gomes has struggled to cement his place in the starting-eleven for the Catalan giants, as he has made only 6 starts for the club in all-competitions this season.
His lack of first-team football suggest that Barcelona may well be willing to listen to offers for his services this month, so Levy must ensure that he avoids a repeat of the Barkley saga and act fast before rival clubs begin knocking on the Nou Camp door for his signature.
After losing out on Barkley, Levy and Pochettino must collectively strive to ensure that they do not become a club full of tales regarding players they came close to signing.
Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top-four this season will be dramatically boosted if they are able to bring Gomes to North-London this month, so they simply must quickly forget about their failure to land Barkley and make a quality acquisition to their squad this month.
