The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been very impressed with the form of Jack Wilshere this season. The Englishman appeared set for the exit door a few months ago, but having gotten past a flurry of injury problems, he has really kicked on this term.
In truth, he has now emerged as arguably Arsenal’s most effective midfielder, and he deserves a lot of credit as a result.
His current contract expires at the end of the season, but now, according to the Telegraph, he could be set to stay at Arsenal for the foreseeable future. The Telegraph reports that Wilshere is close to agreeing fresh terms at the Emirates. Significantly, Wenger’s recent move to attempt to hurry discussions along by stating the importance of a quick deal is said to have made an impact, with Wilshere now looking set to sign on to a deal with a £90,000-per-week base salary.
As a teenager, Wilshere looked set to turn into one of Europe’s best. His play, at that time, was characterised by confidence, technical brilliance and fantastic flair, and he looked set to be a star. Over the last few years, though, he has struggled. Be it through a lack of form or through injury, he hasn’t been able to get a solid run of games under his belt.
A loan to Bournemouth last season definitely helped him out, with the Englishman able to play fairly regularly – though it must be noted that he wasn’t at his best.
This season, though, that has all changed. His form has returned, and he’s looking as good as we thought he could be as a teenager. There’s a long way for him to go, of course, and staying injury free won’t be easy, but it’s looking good for Wilshere.
This is big news for the Gunners. Wilshere has been so influential this term, and he’s clearly a fan favourite at the Emirates.
In terms of raw natural talent, you’d struggle to find better than Wilshere, and so Wenger would be wise to tie him down ASAP.
From the outside, it seems obvious that he wants to stay at the club, and if he can keep performing – this will really go down as a no-brainer for the Gunners.
