West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have in the last few hours been reacting to the news that manager David Moyes has left the club after just six months in charge of the East London outfit.
The former Everton and Manchester United chief replaced the sacked Slaven Bilic at the London Stadium back in November with the Hammers languishing in the Premier League’s bottom three, and thus with the clear brief to keep the club in the top-flight come the end of the campaign. And the 55-year-old managed to do just that in leading West Ham to a 13th place finish, only for the club to decide against extending his deal to remain as manager.
As such, several of our resident Hammers fans have been discussing who could be the man to take over from the Scot, with Manuel Pellegrini one who has reportedly been linked with the role in recent times.
However, while the Chilean has succeeded in English football before in winning the Premier League title with Manchester City, they should forget about appointing him as Moyes’ successor, as there’s only one man who should replace the Scot, namely Rafa Benitez.
Ultimately, the Spaniard has done a truly remarkable job in leading Newcastle United to a tenth place finish in the top-flight this season, this all after staying with them and leading the Magpies to promotion from the Championship last time round.
Add in the fact that the 58-year-old did so with very little funds and just three loan signings during the January transfer window, and the achievement is even more remarkable, and one that will make several sides take note heading into the summer.
And that’s because it very much remains to be seen whether owner Mike Ashley does indeed back the former Liverpool boss this summer, and were he not to give him the funds to seriously improve the current Newcastle squad, it very much remains to be seen if he remains in charge.
And while West Ham fans themselves may feel as though their club haven’t been overly ambitious in the transfer market in recent years, they did spend big on luring Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez to the club last summer, and as such may well be of interest to Benitez.
Ultimately, several of our resident Hammers supporters have been left frustrated by the club’s lack of progression since moving to the London Stadium, and as such will be hoping for a longer term appointment that can take them to the next level – Benitez could be that man.
Having worked wonders at St James’ Park, some financial backing and the time to mould the squad he wants could see Benitez do an even better job at West Ham which, alongside his trophy-winning pedigree, could help propel the Hammers to the next level.
And while Pellegrini did a fine job in leading City to the title back in 2014, one could argue that having the financial resources he had enabled him to build a league-winning team – Benitez has proven this term to be able to get the absolute most out of a squad put together for very little financially.
As such, the Hammers should forget about appointing Pellegrini as Moyes’ successor, and instead seek to lure Benitez away from St James’ Park this summer.
West Ham fans… what do you think? Let us know!
