**This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has turned out since being signed/sold and using statistical figures and statements from key figures to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.**

What does £25m get you in the world of football these days? Well, whatever that may be, you could be hard-pressed to find few better investments than when Liverpool outlaid that sum on Newcastle United’s [Georginio Wijnaldum](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36846756) three years ago.

With Jurgen Klopp building his side during the first summer of his reign that he had begun [nine months prior](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34469429), the Dutchman arrived at Anfield along with the likes of [Sadio Mane and Loris Karius](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/transfers/verein/31/plus/0?saison_id=2016&pos=&detailpos=&w_s=) as the manager set about his quest to conquer Europe.

While domestic silverware has continued to elude Liverpool since Klopp’s arrival, he has nevertheless assembled a group of players that are worthy of achieving those aims – demonstrated by their [97-point haul](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table/2018) last season and their [perfect start](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table/2019) to the current Premier League campaign with seven wins from seven.

And although the front three of [Mane](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/1?reldata=%262017), [Roberto Firmino](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/1?reldata=%262018) and [Mohamed Salah](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liverpool-fc/leistungsdaten/verein/31/plus/1?reldata=%262019) would take the majority of the goalscoring responsibilities at Anfield nowadays (with the trio netting a combined 173 times since the Egyptian’s arrival to date), it could be fair to say the midfield goes somewhat underappreciated as a result – with [Graeme Souness](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/graeme-souness-makes-big-liverpool-17484047) previously highlighting the ‘great job’ they do for the team.

Now rated at £45m by [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/marktwertverlauf/spieler/49499), it is easy to see why Wijnaldum could command a fee almost twice the size of his 2016 price tag.

Wijnaldum has discovered a bit of a knack for turning up in the big moments for Liverpool. [Goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/49499/plus/0?saison=2016&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in his first season showcased his appetite for the important games.

Scoring the first in the win which sealed Liverpool’s qualification for the Champions League in 2016/17 was a key moment at a [‘tense’](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/liverpool-3-0-middlesbrough-gini-10084978) Anfield – and set the Reds on the path to a European final where they would eventually [fall short](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44258022).

Though perhaps his finest hour yet came in the Champions League semi-final second-leg tie against [Barcelona](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48179167), where his quickfire double levelled the scores and catapulted the side towards their victorious night in [Madrid](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48368443).

All of these moments have arguably been essential towards Liverpool’s journey under Klopp, and with Wijnaldum continuing to deliver (albeit somewhat fortuitously) against [Sheffield United](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49778507) at the weekend, £25m would surely be considered a bargain for a player that has given the Reds some of their greatest moments of the past few years.
