QPR Record Transfers

Queens Park Rangers are a Championship club known for their big-money spent in transfer windows, and millions of pounds have been spent in the past, especially when the Hoops were playing in the top flight of English football. Just after one season playing in the Premier League, QPR splashed out in the summer transfer market, securing many top players from all around Europe.

This haul of transfers in the 2012-13 summer window was led by former Blackburn Rovers centre-back, Christopher Samba who joined from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for a massive fee of £13.50m. This was a lot of money to spend on a 28-year-old, though he did have vital Premier League experience and was a natural-born leader.

Samba’s transfer was closely followed by French international Loic Remy who notably joined from Ligue 1 side Marseille for just under £10m. Despite odds, Samba left to rejoin his former club for £10.44m just after one season and Remy followed by joining Chelsea the season after for under £12m, which meant QPR would break even from Samba’s loss.

Stephane Mbia, a teammate of Loic Remy also joined from Marseille but for a lower fee of £5.40m, and Spanish central midfielder Esteban Granero was the final high profile transfer from 2012-13 as he joined from LaLiga giants Real Madrid for £7.20m. A further £10m was spent on trio Samba Diakite, Junior Hoilett, and Ji-sung Park. The Hoops second highest record transfer arrival is Steven Caulker who arrived from Cardiff back in 2014-15 for just under £10m, and teammate Jordon Mutch followed for under £7m.

Rival Championship player Leroy Fer joined from Norwich for £9m, as well as the memorable addition of former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro who arrived for under £7m.

Loic Remy and Christopher Samba are QPR’s two highest record sales, and they both beat the previous record set by Les Ferdinand over 20 years ago in 1995-96. Ferdinand left the Hoops after a great career, scoring an incredible 80 goals in just 163 games.

The former England international left to join Premier League side Newcastle United for a record £8.55m fee. The clubs most recent sale was Luke Freeman who joined Premier League’s Sheffield United for just over £5m, making him the clubs seventh-highest sale in history.

Famous QPR Transfers

One of the most famous transfers in QPR’s history was Rio Ferdinand who joined the Hoops at the end of his career, leaving Manchester United for £1.35m. Ferdinand joined the newly-promoted Premier League club on a one-year contract and retired from professional football just three days after leaving QPR.
