# Rangers: Alex McLeish tips ‘real boost’ for Gers if arch rivals lose Kristoffer Ajer as SPFL report emerges

**Reacting to an SPFL transfer report by [Goal.com](https://www.goal.com/en/news/nice-consider-13m-january-move-for-celtic-defender-ajer/1y24su9nfu7il11zweey35gpwx), detailing how OGC Nice are plotting a raid for arch-rival defender Kristoffer Ajer in January, pundit Alex McLeish has tipped Rangers and Gers boss Steven Gerrard to receive a ‘real boost’ at Ibrox if their Old Firm neighbours lose the star defender.**

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mcleish-exclusive-rangers-will-be-buzzing-if-celtic-12m-sale-is-sealed-hed-be-big-loss/), McLeish claimed the Teddy Bears would be boosted alongside the rest of Scotland if Ajer departs Celtic for Ligue 1 in January – coming as Rangers chase an unprecedented 55th SPFL league title.

### Gers tipped for boost over Ajer

The 6 foot 5 star, described as [‘Cafu-like](https://tbrfootball.com/bbc-sport-pundits-lavish-praise-on-cafu-like-celtic-defender-kristoffer-ajer/)‘, is certainly a mainstay for Rangers’ arch rivals across Glasgow – with the Norwegian starting [16 league matches this season](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321085/Show/Kristoffer-Ajer) whilst proving to be a valuable commodity for Neil Lennon.

Goal report that Ligue 1 giants Nice are plotting to take the star man off their hands next month, with McLeish going on tip Rangers for a ‘real boost’ if this move comes to fruition.

“I think he would be a big loss,” McLeish told [Football Insider.](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mcleish-exclusive-rangers-will-be-buzzing-if-celtic-12m-sale-is-sealed-hed-be-big-loss/)

“Despite recent form, which you have to allow for – players can’t be phenomenal every week, although if he is going to be a top, top player then his consistency has to be like 40, 50 games a season at the top level.

“He will be learning that as well he is still a young man, an ambitious guy and if Celtic were to lose him then that would be a real boost to the rest of the teams in the country, including Rangers.”

### Transfer Tavern take

Indeed, as the Gers aim to stifle their neighbours’ bid to win 10 SPFL medals in succession, Ajer’s potential departure during the winter window would indeed present a ‘real boost’.

Only time will tell whether this move comes to fruition, but it could gift Gerrard with a huge uplift, despite it being a deal that he or his club have absolutely no control over whatsoever.
