# Rangers: Cedric Itten axed to B team

**Rangers forward Cedric Itten has found himself axed to the B team as Giovanni van Bronckhorst continues to omit him from first-team squads.**

### The Lowdown: Itten’s Gers career

The Swiss attacker arrived at the Ibrox in 2020 [from FC St. Gallen for £3 million.](https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/rangers/rangers-sign-swiss-international-striker-cedric-itten-on-four-year-deal-2933090)

In his first season with the club,[Itten only started four Scottish Premiership matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cedric-itten/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/243856/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=124&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=), although he featured a further 19 times by coming off the bench. He went on to score just [four goals in the league campaign](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cedric-itten/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/243856/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=124&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=), before being whisked away on a loan move to German side Greuther Fürth this season.

The 25-year-old appeared in the starting XI more regularly there, making the team on [seven occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cedric-itten/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/243856/plus/0?saison=&verein=65&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) and featuring a further five times as a substitute in the Bundesliga. This even included a shock appearance [against Bayern Munich](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cedric-itten/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/243856/plus/0?saison=&verein=65&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=), where the striker came off the bench for the final 14 minutes and scored.

### The Latest: Itten axed, Gio ‘head-scratcher’

Surprisingly, [Van Bronckhorst recalled Itten in January](https://www.ibroxnews.com/2022/03/08/cedric-itten-axed-to-rangers-b-for-city-of-glasgow-cup-clash-v-queens-park/), and the player has since featured on [nine occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/cedric-itten/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/243856/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=124&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) for the Light Blues across a number of different competitions.

However, it seems like Itten’s Rangers career may be over after the latest development.

As per the Gers B team’s Twitter account (via [Ibrox News](https://www.ibroxnews.com/2022/03/08/cedric-itten-axed-to-rangers-b-for-city-of-glasgow-cup-clash-v-queens-park/)), the 25-year-old was named in the starting line-up for the B team’s City of Glasgow Cup clash with Queen’s Park at Auchenhowie.

[Ibrox News](https://www.ibroxnews.com/2022/03/08/cedric-itten-axed-to-rangers-b-for-city-of-glasgow-cup-clash-v-queens-park/) called Gio’s decision to recall Itten a ‘head-scratcher’ and asked ‘why on earth’ the club went through with it.

### The Verdict: Strange recall?

Regardless of the B team’s impressive [2-0 win yesterday](https://www.rangers.co.uk/article/match-report-rangers-b-2-0-queens-park/7gSvZe8xLfAcfbaUDrtWqH), it is unlikely that Itten will have done enough to prove he should feature for the first-team again.

Therefore, it begs the question as to why Van Bronckhorst decided to recall the Switzerland international, especially given that he was playing regular football in the German top-flight.

Once described as “magnificent” for one of his performances [by former boss Steven Gerrard,](https://www.rangers.co.uk/article/gerrard-praises-jermain-defoe-and-cedric-itten/2HrpnUTobD3m7uKHvNTw4f) it seems like Itten has experienced a serious fall from grace, and consequently, it is expected that his Rangers career may soon be over.
