Colombian outlet El Tiempo has slammed Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos following his display against Uruguay during the qualification process for the 2022 World Cup.
The £13.5m-valued 24-year-old (Transfermarkt) actually started on the bench, being introduced in the second half by Carlos Queiroz. However, his introduction was unable to prevent Colombia from being defeated 3-0 by their opponents.
After the match, El Tiempo (via The Daily Record) were less than impressed, saying he was “not the solution” when he replaced Luis Muriel.
Yet to make his international mark
Whilst Morelos is a lethal marksman at Ibrox – in 154 matches for the 54-time Scottish champions, he has scored 84 goals – he is yet to make his mark on the international stage. In 10 appearances for his country, he has just one goal, and has found it difficult to recreate his club form when wearing the famous shirt of Colombia.
Of course, part of the issue is the number of attacking options available to Queiroz. Muriel, Duvan Zupata and Luis Diaz were all part of this latest squad, whilst Radamel Falcao, Jhon Cordoba and Carlo Bacca were not even included. The problem, perhaps, is that he is not tested often enough with the Gers, and when he joins up with the Colombia national team, he perhaps is not ready for the step up in quality.
Will Morelos leave Ibrox before the end of the season?
Steven Gerrard and co will not care to much about that, though. As long as he does the business for Rangers, that is all that matters.
In other news, this Rangers star struggles on international duty.
