Steven Gerrard has suggested that Bongani Zungu could be involved for Glasgow Rangers for the first time on Sunday against Hamilton.
Zungu could feature
Since moving to Ibrox, the South Africa international is yet to play for his new club. He was signed on deadline day and the needed to quarantine for two weeks before he could even train. Since then, it has been a matter of getting his fitness up to speed.
Speaking ahead of the match this weekend, Gerrard said:
“I am looking to get Bongani involved as soon as possible and he is available for the match at the weekend.
“He is very much closer in terms of him getting towards his level.
“We have been trying to accelerate that and giving him extra work and top-ups after training. His application and his attitude has been fantastic.
“We trained over the last couple of days after getting back from Portugal and we will make a decision but he is getting close.”
Boost for Gers
This is no doubt a boost for the Ibrox outfit. This is a gruelling campaign given the number of matches the 54-time Scottish champions will play. On Thursday, as they conceded twice in the last 15 minutes to draw 3-3 with 10-man Benfica in the Europa League, signs of fatigue arose.
Should Zungu start against Hamilton?
Having another player available in the middle of the park, and an international at that, is a huge boost for the Ibrox outfit. Not only does it allow Gerrard to bring more quality into the team, but it would also let him rest others. It remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old is selected.
